How Do You Get to Kurokawa Onsen and Get Around the Village by Bus and Car?
This guide is for visitors who want to reach Kurokawa Onsen, a hot spring village in the Aso area of Kumamoto Prefecture, and plan how to move around. It uses the English pages of the Kurokawa Onsen Ryokan Association and the English page of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). All pages were read on 2026-10-04.
Bus times and fares are not on these pages, so check them with the bus operators.
The short answer
The association's FAQ says Kurokawa Onsen is accessible by bus, taxi or car. It says buses run just three times a day from Kumamoto, Yufuin and Hakata, and that booking by the day before is required. Because public transport is limited, the FAQ calls travelling by car the most convenient option.
By bus
JNTO says the village is not on any rail line but can be reached by a direct highway bus from Fukuoka, leaving from both Fukuoka Airport and Hakata Station. The FAQ says the Kyushu Odan Bus runs from Kumamoto and Yufuin, while Kyushu Sanko Bus and Hita Bus run from Hakata. Reservations can be made by phone or online. The FAQ lists a multilingual phone line.
From the bus stop to the visitor information center it is a walk of about 10 minutes, or about 600 metres, and the path includes a hill.
By train and bus
The FAQ says the nearest station from the Kumamoto direction is JR Aso Station and from the Fukuoka direction is JR Hita Station. Both are about one hour by car. JNTO says that from Kumamoto Station the nearest local stop is Aso Station, but that you will still need a taxi or bus from there.
By car
The FAQ says Aso, Yufuin and Hita are each about one hour by car. It warns that the mountain roads have many curves and that the streets inside the village are narrow. There are no car rental offices in the village, so it suggests renting at JR Aso Station, JR Hita Station or Kumamoto Airport in advance.
In winter, from December to March, the FAQ says snow and ice are common and that snow tyres or chains are essential.
Parking
The FAQ says there are several free public car parks in the village and about 280 spaces in total. The largest, Kurokawa Parking, has about 150 spaces and lies along National Route 442. Car Park No. 4 is paid, with the first 20 minutes free, then 200 yen per hour and a maximum of 1,000 yen per 24 hours. Inn car parks are generally reserved for overnight guests, so day visitors should use the public car parks.
Taxis and shuttles
The FAQ says taxis are available but very limited in number and none cruise the streets. Most inns offer shuttle services for their guests, usually between the bus stop or the information center and each inn, and advance reservation is often required. Some inns are more than 30 minutes on foot from the town center.
Cash and supplies
The FAQ says there is no ATM in the village and that many places accept cash only. The nearest ATM is at a convenience store about a 15-minute drive away. It also says there are no pharmacies or drugstores open at night nearby, so bring regular medication with you.
If you come for the day
The FAQ says bathing hours vary by inn but are generally 8:30 am to 9:00 pm, with the last entry at 8:30 pm. Bathing hours are updated daily on the association's Bathing Status page, and it advises checking around 9:00 am on the morning of your visit. Day bathing without the pass costs about 500 to 800 yen per person, paid at the inn.
Bicycles and lockers
Bicycle rental is available at the gas station at the village entrance, open every day except Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, at 220 yen per hour. Coin lockers stand next to the information center. Small lockers cost 100 yen and large lockers 500 yen, and only 100 yen coins can be used.
